The Brief: As the new home for the design, development and manufacturing operations for an international aerospace company, the design and build of this 160,000 ft² purpose-built facility required the integration of both Category A and Category B works. Our brief was to deliver a purpose-built bespoke manufacturing and office facility to replace a number of old and disparate facilities elsewhere in Bournemouth and Wales. Energy consumption, low carbon emissions and environmental control were high on the list of priorities for the occupier, as was the ability for a wide variety of manufacturing functions to be accommodated.
The Engineering Difference: We worked with the Design Team to engineer the building envelope to minimise unwanted heat loss and gain and the building was computer-modelled to optimise the amount of glazing and façade and shading.
The internal engineering systems comprised of a VRF system throughout the office areas, induction heating systems and industrial displacement systems in the Productions areas, ventilation systems for the various chemical processes, compressed air distribution throughout and a flexible power distribution system to allow for the relocation of machinery and processes in the future. Heat recovery heat-pump ventilation provides fresh air throughout the office areas and a fully digital BMS controls the HVAC systems to optimise output against demand.
The building achieved the targeted Energy Performance Certificate rating of ‘A’ and BREEAM rating of Very Good.
