The Brief: To redevelop the centre of Shard End, creating an urban village with retail outlets, residential apartments and houses all surrounding the redeveloped focal point of the community library (designed to resemble a shard of glass).

The Engineering Difference: ESC were the advisers of the design team for the construction of the library’s thermal building envelope, minimizing heatloss and creating naturally ventilated spaces.

We developed and managed the services brief from conception to completion including carrying out the SBEM and SAP calculations.

To achieve compliance with the SBEM the library was designed with very low energy consumption and high efficiency equipment. The residential apartments were complemented by photovoltaic panels to achieve compliance with SAP.
